Fall Driving Safety

The fall season brings more than just leaves changing colors, sweaters, & football games. Days get shorter & the likelihood of you driving in the dark increases. in addition to less daylight the weather also gets colder, fog is more likely, sunsets & sunrises cause glare issues, & more rainy days.

Fall Driving Safety Tips:
  1. Be aware of the weather, changing road conditions, & the potential for black ice. Drive slowly & leave plenty of space between yourself & other vehicles on the road. Piles of leaves can also cause issues, not only may they be hiding a pothole but when they are wet & soggy they become just as slippery as a patch of ice.
  2. Keep your headlights clean & working properly. Make sure you're not using your brights while driving through fog.
  3. Keep a pair of sunglasses in your vehicle, the glare from sunrises & sunsets can make it hard to concentrate on the road.
  4. Keep an eye out for pedestrians, kids, & bicyclists. With school back in session kids are walking to & from school or busses.
  5. Watch out for wildlife, especially deer! In November you're 3-5x more likely to hit a deer.
  6. Check your tires! Make sure your tires have the proper tire pressure & if they have enough tread.
  7. & as always, wear your seatbelt!

October 17th-23rd, 2021 is National Teen Driver Safety Week! If you have teen drivers now is a good time to talk to them about safe driving!

Half of all teens will be involved in a car accident before graduating high school & car crashes are the leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 18. Some factors for deadly car crashes include drowsiness, distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, & lack of seatbelts. Drowsiness may be a factor in 10-20% of fatal or injury crashes. Drivers between 17-23 are one of the most prone to drowsy driving. 6 out of 10 teen crashes are cause by driver distraction, this can include passengers, phones, multi-tasking, & other distractions. Texting while driving increases crash risk by 23x! & teens are 2.5x more likely to engage in risky behaviors while driving when other teens are in the car. Alcohol plays a role in many fatal crashes, 1 out of 5 teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking alcohol.

Here are some scary stats from 2019:
2,042 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers
Speeding was a factor in 27% of fatal teen crashes
45% of teenage driving fatalities were not wearing seatbelts
On average 6 teens die every day in the US from car accidents

One good piece of data shows that teen driving fatalities have decreased 43% over the last decade! Help be part of the decrease by reminding your teen of basic driving safety!

National Fire Prevention Week

10/4/2021

Sunday, October 3rd through Sunday, October 9th 2021 is National Fire Prevention Week! This year's theme is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety" which concentrates on knowing what your smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm is telling you. Do you know what your smoke detector is trying to tell you when it does the high pitched chirp? That generally means the batteries are low & need replaced or it could mean you need to replace your whole alarm. What about loud consecutive beeps? That means an emergency is happening & you need to get to safety now!

Does your family know what to do in case of a fire? Do you ever practice fire drills at home? Who is responsible for your pets during a fire? It is better to be prepared in case of a fire than to be left scrambling, not knowing who is where or what to do. Every family should do the following:
1. Plan your escape route. Draw out a map of how to get out & where to go during a fire. Make sure you plan for different escape route locations in your house. Also include a plan on how to get any pets, small kids, or anyone who requires help to get out of the house safely as well.
2. Choose an outside meeting place. Where is everyone going to meet up once they get out safely? You don't want to be too close to your house when it's on fire so pick a spot either across the street or a little ways down the block for all your family members to meet up so you know they are safe.
3. Practice home fire drills. Schools have several drills a year so why don't you have at least one at home? Practicing what to do in case of a fire is a great way to figure out if your escape route works & if any changes need to be made.
4.Test your smoke alarms. When's the last time you replaced their batteries? When's the last time you replaced the whole alarm? Do you even have smoke detectors? Now is a good time to test your alarms & replace as needed.
5. Stop, Drop, & Roll. Teach your family what to do in case the fire gets too close to them.
